After a hard fought organizing campaign the Mechanics of Jim Fisher Volvo in Portland Oregon voted in a landslide election to unionize with the IAM District W24. These Mechanics started working with District W24 lead organizer Jon Irvine back in January and quickly built support among their coworkers.
The owners of the Fisher Volvo dealership hired a anti-worker law firm and attempted to crush this movement using scare tactics and lies. Despite Fisher Volvo's best attempts the Mechanics stayed strong and acted like a Union from day one, defying the anti-union tactics and demanding Union recognition.
IAM District W24 has sent off the official demand to bargain to Fisher Volvo's lawyers and will continue to work with these Mechanics to develop their contract proposals for upcoming negotiations'.
The Fisher Volvo Mechanics are elated that they finally have a avenue to address wage and benefit disparities along with safety issues at their shop. District W24 organizer Jon Irvine stated, " This will be the only Union Dealership in the whole State of Oregon and this group of Mechanics have paved the way for others here in Oregon to reap the benefits of a union contract".
This win was possible because of the bravery of these workers and all the support from the Portland labor movement. The IAM District W24 partnered with the Starbucks United campaign to share resources, putting maximum pressure on both Jim Fisher Volvo and local Starbucks location.
The IAM District W24 is committed to helping workers across their region unionize and realize the security, dignity & respect that comes with a Union contract.
